A few of my favorite general links

Free:

Cyndi's List
www.cyndislist.com
An exhaustive list of genealogical sites on the Internet.

US GenWeb
www.usgenweb.org
The US GenWeb is a volunteer project which has sites for every state and county in the US. Since it is all volunteer (and free!), the site quality varies, but some sites are awesome! Always worth a try. And remember to check out the US GenWeb Archives.

Rootsweb
www.rootsweb.com
A free site that is now a part of Ancestry.com. Message boards and family trees can be useful.

LDS Family History Center
www.familysearch.org
All genealogists owe a debt to the Latter Day Saints (Mormons) for all of their efforts in genealogical research. The LDS site is great, and includes the entire 1880 US census with a searchable all-name index.

Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness
http://www.raogk.com/
A great site that matches searchers with volunteers.
raogk.com

Ted Pack's Beginning Genealogy
http://www.tedpack.org/begingen.html
A great beginning site and has instructions on writing a query on the message boards. If you are a newbie and planning on posting, READ THIS!

Maybe free:

Heritage Quest
Many states participate in a subscription service for Heritage Quest which offers library patrons access to Heritage Quest free. (Texas is one such state, through TexShare). Check with your local library. Heritage Quest has all the US census images and a head of household index searchable database for most (but not all!) census years.
